Exploring the Agricultural & Industrial Museum in York, PA

This weekend we had both kids and were lucky enough to get two whole days without any plans at all- a rarity in our lives. On Saturday, we decided to finally visit a local museum that my husband has been talking about for years, the Agricultural & Industrial Museum in downtown York, Pennsylvania.

Before I get into it, I should say that this building is gorgeous. There's a courtyard that frames the front door with a statue and Edison lights hanging from above. The entire museum is industrial (right on brand) and there are several large rooms for events. We have a friend who was recently married here and so was the woman before us in line. So if you're looking for a unique event space in York, Pennsylvania, the Agricultual & Industrial Museum should be on your list to check out. There's even some free designated parking across the street.

I'm always down for a museum visit of any kind and, like I said, my husband had been interested in visiting this one for a while. However, my 11-year old son was heartbroken to have been pried away from the television for a few hours. We listened to heavy sighs and moaning the whole way to our destination and even walking through the door I saw his eyes roll to the very back of his skull.

Lucky for us, this museum is actually really cool and interesting. Unlike many other museums we've visited, the space was massive and virtually empty, so we didn't need to whisper or stick too close together. When he saw something interesting, it was ok for him to yell, "Mom, look!" and run across the room, which happened pretty much right after we walked into the first exhibit. The whole museum took us about an hour and a half to get through and we learned about many successful businesses, industries, and technologies that York has been home to over the past 300 years or so. We really enjoyed how interactive this museum was. Of course, there were many exhibits and items that were off-limits and not available to touch, but most of the museum was the opposite- you were able to touch and explore to learn more about subject.

The place is much bigger than it looked like from the outside. Every time I thought we had reached the end, there was another large room to explore. My husband is a carpenter and loved the exhibit dedicated to woodworking and pattern making over the years. My son said his favorite part of the museum was playing with some of the electrical exhibits and telephones over the years. My favorite exhibits focused on the dental industry, York Water Company, and York Barbell.

Another huge perk (that we didn't actually take advantage of) is that your ticket into the museum also gets you access into 3 other local museums/tours. Love the idea of visiting this museum and getting lunch downtown as a date, solo day out, or outing with the whole family (like we did).

Visit their website for more information and to purchase your tickets!
